Casino Royale : How It Rolls

Where can you find fantastic action in the movies, in a casino with amazing actors? There is more than one place, but it doesn’t get much better than the James Bond films. The most recent one is Casino Royale and it is with the newest James Bond; Daniel Craig, who has already finished making his newest Bond film and (rumour has it) is signed up for three more Bond films after this latest one which will come out sometime at the end of 2008. Filled with action and a high stakes poker game that will have you holding your breath, Casino Royale is a fantastic success, but did you know that it wasn’t the first Bond film with that title?


In 1967, Hollywood came out with a satire of the Bond films and it was also called Casino Royale, but it could not be more different from the typical Bond film. It is about Sir James Bond who comes out of retirement to stop an evil organisation called SMERSH after M dies. The parody of the Bond films knows no bounds and the fun continues with the ultimate plan being to name every agent James Bond and send them out against the villain. In a final twist, the villain turns out to James Bond’s nephew. The film has the usual beautiful women but this time, you cant necessarily predict what they will do, which makes it all the more fun – just watch and see where the silliness of parody will lead.

Of course the more well known one today is set mainly in Montenegro around a very risky poker game with more than just millions of dollars at stake. The tag line for the film is “Everyone has a past. Every legend has a beginning. Discover how James...became Bond” and that really says it all. This time the film focuses more on the character himself and how he began in the spy business rather than emphasising all the usual clever gadgets. Being the first blond actor to play 007, there has been some controversy around the casting of Craig for the coveted role, but he rose to the occasion and proved himself worthy of the position in the film. Still there are some die-hard fans out there that aren’t so in love with the new look for 007, but if you see the film you can’t help but love the fresh look and feel that Craig brings to the role.

Well, he must be doing something right because shooting for the new Bond film has finished and around November this year Quantum of Solace will be released. This film is a sequel to the previous one and follows Bond as he seeks revenge for the death of Vesper, the woman he fell in love with in Casino Royale. Watch Daniel Craig streak across the screen in the new action packed film and be blown away!
